Those of you following the Balticon and Contracts series on the blog have probably been wondering where the hell I’ve been – and those of you following the podcasts are really wondering.
Well, I’ve been writing and producing an album. Wish there was a sexier answer, but there it is. And it is fun 🙂
I’m going on pod later today to record some special episodes – one will contain Down From Ten bloopers!
The other one is the occasion for the post. I’m going to be recording a special episode about guns. Particularly, about how to deal with guns in fiction, geared for people who don’t have extensive first-hand experience with them. I’m going to be covering vocabulary, safety, different types of firearms, popular myths that come from movies, and other stuff that can shoot your credibility in the foot. To this end, if you have questions, please post them to the comments here, so I can be sure to answer them.
See you on pod soon! And fear not. The Balticon Adventure and Principles of Contracts both return next week.
jdsawyer
After a childhood in academia, J. Daniel Sawyer declared his independence by dropping out of high school and setting off on a series of adventures in the bowels of the film industry, the venture capital culture of silicon valley, surfing safaris, bohemians, burners, historians, theologians, adventurers, climbers, drug dealers, gangbangers, and inventors before his past finally caught up to him.
Trapped in a world bookended by one wall falling in Berlin and other walls going up around suburbia and along national borders throughout the world, he rediscovered his deep love of history and, with it, and obsession with predicting the future as it grew aggressively out of the past.
To date, this obsession has yielded over thirty books and innumerable short stories, the occasional short film, nearly a dozen podcasts stretching over a decade and a half, and a career creating novels and audiobooks exploring the world through the lens of his own peculiar madness, in the depths of his own private forest in a rural exile, where he uses the quiet to write, walk on the beach, and manage a production company that brings innovative stories to the ears of audiences across the world.

Everything I know about guns, I’ve learned from video games (mostly survival horror, like Resident Evil) and Max Brooks, so I’m very much looking forward to this. 🙂
Noble Bear
As a self avowed “Gun Nut”(yes, the capitals are necessary), hack gunsmith and atrocious writer, I’m looking forward to this. Largely in hopes of it containing stuff dealing with how to handle guns in fiction, both to help improve my own writing and to hopefully bust some of the bullshit out there that keeps getting recirculated. 🙂
Although I’m terribly late in getting to this, I wish I’d found this blog post sooner so I could have posed a few questions of my own. Speaking of which, I can’t seem to find the link to the actual podcast, is it up yet(as of July 8), and if so, what category would it be under?
Thank you so much for what you do,
Paul

Please include a fair amount on shotguns and the various WEIGHTS of guns.
Also please include the various types of ammo that are available and/or can be made that will work.
Often in movies and tv, a character will obtain a gun, and lacking a holster, tucks it into his pants with the gun POINTING at the FAMILY JEWELS! This does not make sense to me.

Post your questions. I’m writing the whole podcast first before recording it (notice how I’m learning from previous mistakes).
Sterling —
Will do. There will be an entire episode just on ammo, another just on shotguns, and the first episode concentrates specifically on the weight issue. Keep the great ideas coming.
Katie June —
Oooh, that’s a good one. I shall work it into the show, definitely.
Thanks all for your comments — keep the questions coming!

Thanks for the reply, Dan.
Also, I would like to add a request for a little bit of time to be spent differentiating between a semi-automatic rifle and an “assault rifle” and why the phrase “assault weapon” is totally bullshit in fiction and reality. That one really tweaks my family jewels.

Please cover hard science fiction “guns.” Things like mass drivers, various forms of stun weapons, etc.
Can’t wait! I need my fix!
